Cefalù is, without much effort on your part, a romantic place. Stone lanes that narrow to a shoulder's width. Cathedral squares lit by a setting sun. A sea that turns a specific shade of blue-green in late afternoon that nobody has ever managed to photograph convincingly. We know couples who have come here once and never entirely left.
What follows is specific: the sunset spots that are actually worth the walk, the restaurants that create the right kind of evening, the beaches where you will not be sharing a square metre of sand with a hundred other people. The obvious things are obvious for a reason — but there are better versions of most of them.
Sunset — two spots worth choosing between
The most photographed sunset in Cefalù is from the top of La Rocca. Climb in the early evening rather than the morning — the park closes at 20:00 in summer, which catches the golden hour over the sea. The entire town glows a specific shade of honey as the sun dips behind the headland. The climb takes 45 minutes each way; plan accordingly.
For something easier, the Bastione di Capo Marchiafava — the 16th-century fortification on the northern tip of the old town, directly above the water — offers a panoramic view of the sea with no entry fee and a five-minute walk from the Corso. Locals gather here at dusk. It has none of the tourist infrastructure of La Rocca, and all of the view.
After either: the Dokeio Rooftop Lounge Bar in the old town has sweeping views of the sea, the Cathedral, and La Rocca. Order drinks, not dinner — it is a bar, not a restaurant — and let the evening settle.
Where to eat — the restaurants worth booking
Cortile Pepe is the best table in Cefalù. Michelin-recommended tasting menus in the candlelit dining room of a 17th-century palazzo — the kind of evening that justifies the journey. Book two to three weeks ahead in summer, and do the tasting menu rather than ordering à la carte. Around €50 per person for the full experience.
Brama (Via Nicola Botta 13, €30–70) is the other answer to a special evening: open kitchen, a leafy fairy-lit courtyard, and food that reviewers regularly describe as approaching Michelin quality. It is less formal than Cortile Pepe, which some couples prefer. Book at least a week ahead in season.
1856 Bistrot on Via XXV Novembre is newer and worth knowing: a small number of covers, an open kitchen, and a chef with serious mainland credentials. More relaxed but no less considered. The kind of place that is still finding its audience, which means you can usually get a table with three or four days' notice.

Wine bars and aperitivo
Enoteca Rossorubino is the best wine bar in Cefalù by some distance. Natural and dessert wines by the glass, a serious list of Sicilian producers, and a room that feels genuinely unhurried. Go before dinner rather than after — it works better as a prelude than as a finale.
Alchimia on Via Umberto I is a newer arrival: an enoteca, oyster bar, and cocktail bar in one space, with a terroir-driven list and creative cocktails built around Sicilian spirits. The Sicilian Negroni is the thing to order. More polished than most wine bars in town.
Aperitivo hour in Cefalù runs from about 18:00 to 20:00. Order a drink at almost any bar in the old town and a small plate of snacks will arrive without being asked for. The cathedral square at Bar Duomo is the obvious choice — obvious because it works.
Quieter beaches for two
The main Lungomare beach is excellent. It is also, from June to September, heavily used. For a different kind of afternoon: Settefrati, reached via a one-kilometre path through greenery west of the old town, is a mix of sand and rock with good snorkelling and rarely more than a handful of people. No facilities, no sun beds, bring what you need.
Kalura (Caldura beach), twenty minutes east of the old town on foot, is shingle and dark pebbles — steep step into the water but exceptional clarity. The volcanic outcrops break the surface of the sea and the water colour in late afternoon is extraordinary. Better for swimming and snorkelling than for sunbathing. Go early or after 17:00 to avoid the peak-day heat.
A private boat trip
The coastal waters around Cefalù are best experienced from the water, and a private boat charter changes the scale of what is possible. The evening walk
The passeggiata — the Italian ritual of the evening walk — is at its best in Cefalù between 19:00 and 21:00. Start at the seafront and walk into the old town via Corso Ruggero. The shops are still open, the gelaterias are doing business, and the Cathedral square fills with the kind of low-level social noise that belongs specifically to Sicilian summer evenings. Turn down Vicolo Caracciolo for the ceramic vases on the steps. End at the Bastione for the last of the light over the water.
From there, you are five minutes from wherever you decide to have dinner. That is the rhythm of the place: walk, drink, eat late. It does not require planning.
